four to six weeks, with a little care
What to expect from a real, engraved pumpkin, and the few things that make it last.
An engraved pumpkin lasts four to six weeks. It’s real produce, so weather and care matter, and the two ends of that range are mostly about where it sits. The engraving marks the surface instead of cutting through it, which is why the pumpkin stays whole and holds its shape long after a carved one has caved in.
It arrives bright, with the lettering a clean tan against the orange. Over the weeks the engraved lines darken and the skin can pick up a spot or two. That’s a pumpkin doing what pumpkins do, and the name stays readable the whole way.
Rain is fine. A frost is fine for a night or two. A long warm spell in September is the thing that ages a pumpkin fastest, so if the forecast turns hot, a few days in the shade helps.
Every pumpkin is treated with an all-natural deterrent before it leaves the workshop, and that does most of the work. If you know you have a hungry crew in the yard, a few things help: a dusting of cayenne around the base, peppermint oil on a cotton ball behind the display, a bird feeder moved away from the porch, and the display kept near a door you actually use, with a motion-sensor light if you have one.
Once it softens, it goes in the compost or the garden bed. If you have a display package with season-end removal, we come back and clear the whole porch. It goes to a local farm to be eaten by the animals.
